The sight of old temples tops the mind of many visitors when thinking of Ayutthaya, but In fact, Ayutthaya has a great variety of delicious food to offer which makes a visit to this old capital more colourful.

Phae Krung Kao
This old restaurant has been in business for more than 40 years. Located by the Pa Sak River, decorated like raft house in ancient style surrounded by pleasant atmosphere, while air-conditioned room is also available, the restaurant serves delicious dishes hard to find elsewhere.
Recommended dishes: grilled river prawn (kung maenam phao), deep fried common
sheatfish topped with chilli sauce (pla namngoen rat phrik) and knifefish balls in green curry (kaeng khiaowan lukchin pla krai).

Phak Wan
Only 50 m from Phae Krung Kao, this is the origin of many recipes made with phak wan
(melientha), the only one in Ayutthaya. Well known by local clientele, the restaurant serves great food with unique taste in a pleasant surroundings.
Recommended dishes: Thai fried noodle with prawn and melientha (phatthai phak wan kung sot), melientha salad (yam phak wan), noodle with melientha (kuaitiao phak wan) and fried
mushroom (het thot).

Sai Thong River
Only 200 m from Phak Wan is Sai Thong River, a pleasant riverfront restaurant.
Recommended dishes: roast duck with taro (pet op phueak), deep fried black banded
kingfish topped with spicy sauce (pla samli loi fa) and deep fried chicken mixed with crab topped with salad cream (kai sawan man pu).

Khrua Taen
Spicy food lovers will find Khrua Taen worth a visit for its delicious, spicy house specialty dishes.
Recommended dishes: shrimp innards (tai kung), pan fried shrimp in coconut milk gravy (chuchi kung), spicy stir fried pork cartilage (phat phet kraduk on).

Hia Klae Chao Kao
This is the original pork satay shop, the one and only in Ayutthaya, also serving liver and entrails. Its great taste is unmatched by others, as guaranteed by various gastronomic programs on TV.

Ruean Rabrong
This is another river front restaurant on U-Thong Road, the ring road around the city island, a perfect place for dining and admiring the surrounding landscape.
Recommended dishes: steamed knifefish balls with curry paste (homok lukchin pla krai), deep fried sun-dried snake fish (pla chon daet diao) and fried prawn cake (thot man kung).

Kuaitiao Yak Yai
This beef and pork noodle shop has been open for more than 50 years. With the secret family’s recipe, this noodle shop has many branches but the original one is at Chao Phrom Market. The delicious soup and home-made tofu balls are the shop’s unique recipe.
Recommended dishes: beef noodle (kuaitiao nuea), pork noodle (kuaitiao ruea) and fried tofu (taohu thot).

Kuaitiao Kai Chik Phonprapha
Those who don’t eat beef or pork may be delighted with chicken noodles which come with shredded or simmered chicken in delicious soup. A long queue is normal at lunch time but most clients are patient enough to wait for the great taste.
Recommended dishes: noodles with shredded chicken and noodle with simmered chicken in tomyam soup.

Tom Lueat Mu Ta Prite Na Wang
This is a long-established pork blood soup (tom lueat mu) restaurant. The original taste comes from pork meat, pork blood and entrails–delivered daily so there is need not for frozen products. Be there early in the morning since it is quite popular and is normally sold out by late morning.
Recommended dishes: pork blood soup (tom lueat mu).

Central Market of Agriculture
Visitors wishing to buy fresh food to take home must stop by at the Central Market of Agriculture which features a great variety of fresh food, especially the renowned large river prawns. This is also a good place to dine in. A number of stalls serve grilled river prawns (kung phao) at cheap price as well as grilled salt-coated snakehead (pla chon phao kluea) and delicious steamed snakehead fish with curry paste (homok pla chon).
The market is on the Asia Highway (inbound), Amphoe Uthai, Ayutthaya.
